Wrong or Duplicate Data in Motus
Updated September 2026
FMCSA moved millions of records from its old systems into Motus, and it warned registrants ahead of time to review their records and save a copy to compare against. Since the May launch, carriers and the insurance-data firm CAB have reported records that came across wrong. Here is what has been reported, and what fixes it.
What has been reported
- A new USDOT number instead of the old one. A Wisconsin dairy hauler trying to claim a 24-year-old number found Motus had created a new one, and then fielded calls from insurers and vendors about the 'change' (Overdrive, June 2026).
- Conflicting statuses. Records showing active and revoked at the same time, traced to imperfect migration; CAB said FMCSA was changing data daily (Overdrive, June 2026).
- Insurance minimums changed on their own. CAB counted about 150,000 carriers whose required minimums went up and about 27,000 that now show as underinsured on paper (CCJ, September 2026).
- Names overwritten. A Texas carrier's legal name was replaced by its brokerage division's name during an insurance renewal; weeks later its BOC-3, on file since 2008, was purged and a truck was held at a weigh station (CCJ, September 2026).
- Old policies staying active after a replacement, authority shown active with $0 insurance, and 'Discontinued Revocation' cancellations with no revocation behind them - CAB's list of six error types (CCJ, September 2026).
How to get yours corrected
- Compare against your saved record (or your last MCS-150 and your certificate). Write down exactly which field is wrong.
- Check SAFER (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov). It is what brokers and inspectors look at; if SAFER and Motus disagree, say so in the ticket.
- Open a ticket with the USDOT number, the wrong field, the right value, and proof (the certificate, your insurance filing, the IRS letter). FMCSA said in September that small discrepancies in a carrier's own data - a swapped digit in an address or email - made migration errors worse, so give them the clean version.
- Do not create a second account or a second application. Duplicates are the one thing that makes a data problem harder to unwind.
- Call your agent if the error is insurance. The insurer files the BMC-91/91X electronically and can re-file; you cannot.
Read the status reasons
Motus shows more detail than the old system did: Pending - FMCSA Review, Pending - Process Agent (Form BOC-3) Filings, Pending - Financial Responsibility Filings. Each one names who owes the next move - FMCSA, your process agent, or your insurer.
Your record, your dates, one calendar.
Stay Legal keeps your USDOT number, filing dates and deadlines in one place - the copy you will want when a record has to be corrected.
